Stop the World, I want to get off.

Busy day today, what?

Protesters in England marched against Bush, and evil men in Istanbul killed innocents, and controversy over whether the two events were related – and, if so, whether it was the subject or the object of the former that caused the latter.

Tech Central Station found itself in the middle of a controversy about who runs it, and whether they were also running its writers.

The energy bill has people on both sides up in arms, Michael Jackson’s arrest reminds us yet again that there are actually people out there whose reaction upon seeing him within 100 feet of their children is not to look for a gun, or at least a handy rock to throw and I’m too tired to either update the blogroll or else write the amusing insight that I had about Giant Puppets and the Protestors Who Love Them that I had planned…

… all in all, as of 11:58 PM my wish was to hit the giant reset button and get to have a do-over on the last 24 hours, provided of course that I could have made a couple quick phone calls to Turkey. It wasn’t a horrible day, like some of the ones we’ve had within recent memory… but a good day? No, not really.

When it comes right down to it, John Cole’s a damn smart man: just contemplate the this for a while. Beautiful, aren’t they? Like draperies of living and flying stained glass, resting for a moment before swirling back into the sky in their dance. It reminds me of the old Shaker song Simple Gifts:

Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free,
‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain’d
To bow and to bend we shan’t be asham’d,
To turn, turn will be our delight
‘Till by turning, turning we come round right.

I invite you to use that picture to seek out whatever peace is still within your reach after a day of bitter debate and news.

  1. what a great post. let’s hope tomorrow’s better. and I look forward to your suggestions about how to somehow do an intervention to separate the embarrassing theater contigent* from their giant puppets, when you’re in a lighter mood.
    *phrase stolen from Jon Stewart

  2. “Mexican police have been called in to protect the sanctuaries for the butterflies”
You know, sometimes I think this world just does not deserve to have me in it 🙂

  3. Yesterday was an awful day in general Moe. We were anxious and depressed at my house, but it turns out our friends in Turkey are OK (the college student son of friends of ours lives in Taxim near the British bank that was bombed, so we were a bit beside ourselves, but he’s fine).
    Today seems brighter.
I know it’s a cliche, but after you’ve lost several people in a few years it hits you hard that each day is a gift. Today, I’m going to go bask in the sun along the Hudson and be grateful.
Of course I’m also going to rant on and on about Bush and the Mass. Governor, but it definitely feels good to be able to do so.
