  1. Hi Moe, von, Katherine —
This isn’t relevant to Katherine’s post, for which I apologize. But I just wanted to remind you — and your readers! — that Obsidian Wings is in the running for an award over at http://wizbangblog.com/poll.php.
Wings is in the category “Flippery Fish”, which is a “blog ecosystem” ranking based on link activity. You are far below the likes of Andrew Sullivan (“Higher Being”), Brad de Long (“Mere Mortal”) or even Kim du Toit (“Playful Primate”). On the other hand, you are far above my blog (“Slithering Mollusc”), which in turn is well above the lowest category (“Insignificant Microbe”). The ecosystem rankings can be found at truthlaidbear.com.
But I digress. Right now Wings is in… mmm… sixth place, out of exactly twenty competitors.
Unfortunately, #1 and #2 are tough — very tough. #1 is a sex blog, run by two perhaps excessively adorable Canadian exhibitionists. And #2 is the blog of a serviceman posting from Baghdad.
But frankly, this blog is better than either of those.
    (Whoops, back in a mo.)
    Doug M.

  2. Right, where was I… ah, the contest. OW is a better blog than any of those above it in today’s rankings. (I know, because I took a few minutes to look at them all.) Some are okay, and a couple are pretty interesting — hem, hem — but none are as good as this one.
And while I think it’ll be hard to win this fight — you’re up against audio files of young Canadians having perhaps excessively loud sex, and/or blog verite reports from occupied Baghdad — I think honor demands you at least give it a shot.
(Okay, I admit: I have developed a mild bias against the Canadian kids. No, no, not because it’s a sex blog — nothing wrong with /that/. No, because they’re just so damn precious and adorable. But I digress.)
You can vote for yourself, all your readers can vote for you, you can vote twice per day (okay, once every twelve hours), and a relatively small number of votes can make a difference — right now, just six votes would move Obsidian Wings to fifth place, then six more would move you to fourth.
Come on, Wings readers. This blog is worth your time and attention; isn’t it worth clicking on a “vote” button?
And hey — while you’re over there, you can vote for tacitus too. And Volokh Conspiracy, Brad de Long, Fistful of Euros, or whoever. From Instapundit to Matthew Yglesias, they’re all up for one award or another.
So vote early, vote often, and vote Wings.
    cheers,
    Doug M.

  3. Ummm…potential confusion factor here: OW has long been used as shorthand for Oliver Willis. So, when Doug made his comment I questioned his judgement. Oliver started out pretty decent, but gradually devolved into reflexively whacking Bush at any and every excuse, no matter how silly. We can get that over at DU, if we want to.

  4. Which is really the reason why I haven’t pushed our nomination… which was very nice of whoever nominated and voted.
And we need another contraction than OW, I agree (pity, I liked that one). ObWi?

  5. Katherine, David Brooks belongs in the Style section, along with Maureen Dowd. Brooks’ style is best described as panglossalalia. (speaking in tongues about this best of all possible worlds.)
