It is getting more interesting.

This is probably more Katherine‘s purview, but the race for the Democratic nomination is getting tighter. Via Kos (who provides further analysis), a nationwide poll shows Dean to be at 22% (down from 26% in December) and Clark to be at 13% (up from 11%). The big winner, however, is Kerry, who has bounded from 6% to 10% in a month. His attacks on Dean appear to be having an effect.

  1. It’s all within the margin of error, so who knows. I’d be surprised if Dean wasn’t hurt a bit–he’s been attacked from 9 different directions since the Gore endorsement. But Kerry? I just don’t buy it. I’m from his state. No one I know supports him. Literally, no one. And so many of us did, originally. I know enough to wary of the anecdote but it’s confirmed by polls too.
There’s a lot I don’t understand about this race, though. I can’t understand how Gephardt’s done as well as he has, or why Edwards has done as poorly.
I’d be much more interested in an Iowa poll. Haven’t seen one in a few weeks.

  2. I see why people think Clark is more electable. I see why people think Edwards is more electable.
I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone thinks–let alone is certain–that Gephardt, Kerry, or Lieberman is more electable.

  3. I think with Gephardt, it’s that he’s from the Midwest and might have more pull in Midwestern swing states. Lieberman, the thought is “more moderate” equals “more electable,” forgetting the “nobody likes him” factor. Kerry, not sure.

  4. Gephart has the longest career and closest ties to the infrastructure of the party (think Bob Dole). Dean’s comments concernng taking his “crew” with him (if not nominated) have to be more than a little irritating to party big wigs. If politics is your trade (a non volonteer) then you dance with the one that brung ya or you’re not going to the next dance. Dean looks too much like Nader and long term players are not impressed.
This is now a continuation of the Clinton – Gore struggle and Dean/Gore is simply unacceptable to the wheels. They will not forgive Gore for the lousy campaign he ran last time. The death of a thousand cuts awaits and then Gephart/Clark or Clark/Gephart can get on with business. This really ain’t beanbag and no “outsider” gets to change the rules. (I think I got a full week’s quota of cliches into that.)
