I just caught Howard Dean on The Daily Show. Jon Stewart had his “Sister Souljah” moment. Unfortunately, Dean was cast in the role of the good Sister. (Where is Sister Souljah, anyway? For that matter, where’s MC Ren? How ’bout Slash?)
Good luck up in the wilds of New Hampshire, Katherine. That you’re supporting Dean, well, gives me hope for Dean.
that was just weird. Not sister Souljah-ish, but just bizarre. (Stewart seemed kind of off his game too.)

I agree. It was a bizarre take down. And not at all fair.
(My use of “Sister Souljah moment” may have been my own bias creeping in — if so, forgive me.)
So what happened, for those of us with no access to Comedy Central at the moment?
they did an interview with a lot of comic voice overs. Hard to describe, and I can’t figure out to what extent Dean was in on the joke.
My best guess is that they were making fun of Jane Pauley (or whoever) interviewed Dean, and Dean’s lousy comic timing ruined it? But I don’t know.
I mean Diane Sawyer. Those chicks are all alike.
😉
Hey, it wasn’t that bad. It ended well. The voice over about “show some teeth” made me laugh, and have some respect for Dean. (I don’t think it was sincere, but he at least was willing to make fun of himself for political benefit). Also the “young people”… “lower”… “lower”… bit was funny and Dean came off like he was “in” on the joke. Yes it was awkward and poorly executed, but how it ends will have the lasting impression.
Actually, each of the serious Democratic candidates had a repeated chance for a “Sister Souljah” moment with Al Sharpton on the stage. Pity that not even one of them had the guts to bring up his slandering of a police officer and denounce him for his inciting of anti-Semitic violence in New York.
If you watched the credits at the end of the show, they show Dean recording the voice-overs — he was in on the joke. I didn’t think it was intended to be damaging to Dean, and I thought it was fairly funny. Not as funny as seeing Lieberman get “‘Joe-Blow’n off” by the voters, but funny.

I caught the voice-overs after I posted. Dean was in on at least part of it, which raises the question: why did he decide to do it?
von,
Dean did it b/c it I am pretty sure it was not intended as a “takedown” of Dean, but of the interviewer. Earlier in the show Stewart had a bit on “all the tough policy questions” Diane Sawyer (did not) ask.

That may have been the intent, but it didn’t come off that way.
Seeing the credits changes the whole thing–I hadn’t even realized that was him speaking in the voiceovers, and yes, he can smile for real.
Also, when his face turns green he is apparently supposed to be a Teletubby.
He still should keep his day job, naturally.
