I am outraged. Outraged!

How dare David Crosby do such a thing:

NEW YORK – Musician David Crosby was arrested on marijuana and gun possession charges early Saturday at a Times Square hotel, police said.

Crosby, 62, a two-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had checked out of the hotel but left a piece of luggage behind, police said.

A hotel worker found the bag and went through it looking for identification, and called police after finding marijuana, a .45-caliber handgun and two knives, authorities said.

Smoking. He dared to bring smoking materials into a New York City hotel. Oh, don’t try and pretend that he was just bringing it through; he was planning to take big heaping carcinogenic puffs of smoke and release them on an unsuspecting, pristine Manhattan. Yes, at least it was marijuana, not tobacco, but that’s no excuse. You can bet that he keeps some of those dirty cigarettes around him, too: no, he’s got the look of a pipe smoker. Or maybe – horrors! – he does snuff.

Thank God for Bloomberg, that’s all I have to say.

Moe

Seriously: can we legalize pot to the same status and restrictions as booze, already? The guns issue is less troublesome – I’m pretty sure that they wouldn’t have cared if there hadn’t been pot involved – but this attitude towards maryjane and legal adults needs fixing.

While we’re at it: not that I work in the City any more, but if I did I’d be ready to indicate to the Democrats there that they could have back Gracie Mansion, if they liked.

  1. I hope he is beyond parole. The man did some hard time down here in Texas.
Just a little stupid for an ex-convict to forget that particular bag.
Tommy Chong did time for selling bongs. I don’t know what more can be said about this. I don’t expect any real change.

  2. So you’re the one, Moe.
You’re the one who calls it “maryjane”…the search is over.
The degree of idiocy displayed over this drug in this country, where 5-martini lunches are perfectly legal, speaks volumes about the efficacy of the bread-and-circuses method of governing.

Edward and I agree on something? Who’d a thunk it.
Me, I’m interested in who came up with “doobie”. Mary jane wasn’t much of a stretch from marijuana, but doobie?
That person, indirectly, is also responsible for The Doobie Brothers.

  4. My older brother, in only one of his rebellious acts as a teenager, nicknamed my Mom’s chihauhau “Doobie.” My Mom thought it was such a cute name she started using it herself.
I still don’t think she knows why the neighbors were snickering when she called for the dog.

Wait a sec. Isn’t MJ carcinogenic? I mean, I couldn’t care less if folks want to self-medicate with pot rather than booze as long as they get jailed if they hurt someone else in the process, but aren’t we doing our best to price and regulate cigarettes out of the reach of many people in an attempt to reduce the future burden on our health care system?
Shouldn’t we have the same attitude about grass?

  6. Crionna, to some degree you’re right, but try smoking the two-packs-a-day eqivalent of weed and see if the health risks are sustainably equivalent. My guess is you’d have to stop long before you did the same damage to your lungs, no?

  7. But Edward, we both live in cities that ban cigarette smoking nearly everywhere based on a health concern for the inhalation of second-hand smoke; much less two-packs-a-day.
While its true MJ smokers may smoke less, Johns Hopkins says that MJ has more tar and carcinogens than cigarettes.
Also, of the people you know who smoke MJ, how many smoke cigs too? Heck just in my 8 person poker group, of the 6 who smoke MJ, 5 of them smoke cigs (prolly a pack+ a day). I’m honestly pretty worried for them.
Again, I don’t care about the affects as long as they don’t drive or something, but legalizing a known carcinogen?

  8. Damn Crionna, you’re doing a good job of convincing me…
OK, OK, but if MJ was legalized, I’m sure methods to lower its toxicity could easily be developed, no?
I personally can’t partake in this recreational drug because I become paralyzed by the paranoia…”reality is for people who can’t handle drugs…”
Still, for folks who can handle it, make it legal.

  9. Still, for folks who can handle it, make it legal.
I’d agree with that, if you take out the part about “for folks who can handle it”.
If I ever had an occasion to smoke pot (meaning, if it were ever legal and kosher as far as the DoD is concerned) I’d not do it ‘cept occasionally (but lightly) on weeknights and sometimes on weekends. So, I’m thinking, for most people the cancer risk would be small because the usage would be at about the same frequency and intensity they currently use alcohol.

  10. I’d agree with that, if you take out the part about “for folks who can handle it”.
    agreed…
caveat was just an autobiographical footnote…feel free to disregard.

  11. My understanding is that 3 joints = 20 cigarettes based on the levels of tar and other cancer causing agents in MJ and the length of time the smoke is in the lungs.
So, a shared one on maybe two weeknights and a couple whole ones on the weekends might be a decent average? (I know people who use it much more than that and not your typical stoners either). If so, then that’s 60 cigarettes a week.
That seems like a lot to me. I think if my wife averaged 9-10 cigarettes a day I’d be concerned for her health.
I just don’t understand how we can discuss nationalizing health care and using said health care costs even now to regulate the wearing of seat belts and moto helmets etc. etc. and in the same breath legalize a known carcinogen.
