Why are there no Great Centrist Demonstrations?

Because our slogans are kind of lame, that’s why.

“WHAT DO WE WANT?”
“MORE OF THE SAME!”

“WHEN DO WE WANT IT?”
“WHENEVER’S CONVENIENT!”

Forgive the joke; it’s a segue (not a seque) into this blog I found while noodling around the Net: Centerfield, which is the official blog of the Centrist Coalition. Like ObWi, it’s a group blog… I suspect that they’ve got a tighter political grouping than we do, though. At any rate, we’ll stick ’em on the blogroll and see if they spout fangs.

UPDATE: And just so they know that we linked them (email? BAH!!!!!) here’s a speech that one of them wishes that Kerry would make.

  1. A Centrist Demonstration

Moe Lane of Obsidian Wings portrays a hypothetical demonstration by centrists. “WHAT DO WE WANT?” “MORE OF THE SAME!” “WHEN DO WE WANT IT?” “WHENEVER’S CONVENIENT!” If I wasn’t a moderate, I’d rip Moe to shreds over this mischaracterization. Instead,…

  2. Thanks too. In my humble opinion, the middle will decide this election. If the Democrats don’t forfeit the national security issue, it could be a blowout for Kerry. Still, things are unbelievably fluid right now.

  3. Great Punch cartoon from about two decades ago: Milquetoast couple in their living room, anxiously huddled around an old tuner/speaker combo. Caption:
“This is the Voice of Moderation. I wouldn’t go so far as to say we’ve actually SEIZED the radio station . . . ”
cf Robert Guillaume’s Saturday Night Live monologue of some years ago: “If we don’t get some moderation, we gonna burn this mother down!”

Because when someone defines himself or herself as a “centrist,” his or her definition of “centrist” is almost invariably, “whatever I believe in is the centrist position.”
There are no “Great Centrist Demonstrations” because this usually turns out not to be the case.
