Little bit grumpy tonight…

…so I’ll turn this into an open geek thread and be done with it. Fun geekstuff information always good for making Moe less grumpy.

  1. (sigh) I haven’t been able to really geek out since I had a kid.
    Wait…blogging. Does that count?
I miss the days when I could stay up all night – and half of the next day – playing a new video game with a friend. Making things die in a very loud and military fashion….it was a golden age.

  2. Walking across 14th street yesterday, near Union Square, I saw this guy hawking “Sony Memory Chips! Sony Memory Chips!” and I thought, Neuromancer is closer than we think.

  3. Yes on the whole firefox thing, but watch out for 0.9. The damned thing died on me after two days. It’s not hopelessly difficult to repair, but…

  4. I haven’t been to Origins in awhile but they make a really great cammomile shampoo 🙂

  5. OK, I thought I was fairly geekie, but I apparently still have some work.

Ah. I recognize that (from my Dragon Magazine-reading days) as a science fiction/fantasy convention. Have fun.
My friends and I are planning to crash GenCon; is that close enough?
This one I know! Heck, enjoy Indianapolis; God knows that I don’t always. (Particularly missing Chicago today.)
I have had a tattoo of a Decepticon symbol on my left shoulder for over a decade now.
This is extremely disturbing. Repent! The Autobots are at hand.

Heh. It’s a celebratory road-trip/geekathon/mocking-the-geeks-athon thing to celebrate the fact that my friend and I are now ABD. Don’t worry, though: I’ll pour a libation in honor of those who (with real jobs and incomes and whatnot) have fallen behind 🙂

  7. Moe, you brought this up elseblog, but I’ll reroute it to the geek thread.
It’s usually pretty straightforward to avoid anti-webbrowsing firewalls if you can find a proxy server configured correctly. Depending on how much is blocked (the entire Internet, just port 80, everything but a list of accepted sites, just a list of bad sites), it has varying degrees of difficulty.
Of course, that’s just the technical side. There’s also the HR side, which generally depends on how close the people around you are to the people who decided blocking off the web was a good idea.

  8. Ok, how ’bout this one: In a fit of horrible adolescent relapse, I have recently tried to set up a tabletop cyberpunk RPG session using the (long-cancelled) Alternity rule system, on the theory that there was nothing wrong with hanging around on a Saturday afternoon rolling dice and downing soda as long as I could at least make the claim I’m spending that time with friends.
Then two of my four players backed out before I’d even really written up details for the setting, protesting lack of free time. So, now I find myself teetering on the brink of launching a forum game and GMing adventures for the first time in approximately 5 years.
    Once more, into the brink!
