And now, for something of a bit more immediate importance…

… no, I’m being quite serious. The Swift Boat / Kerry brouhaha going on right now* is unlikely to have all that much of an effect on my daily life – but the fact that JibJab settled its copyright issues with the Guthrie estate quite possibly will. More accurately, the possibility that my habit of making my own filkings may be aversely affected in the future has receded a touch, for which I am duly grateful.

*My own opinion? I didn’t like 527s when they were – are – screaming their damfool heads off about President Bush, don’t see why I’m supposed to like them now. Other than that, my major reaction is amusement at the sudden outbreak of Dammit, It’s Different When We Do It that seems to have broken out across the spectrum. Sorry, folks, but it isn’t. Keep doing it, if you like – free country, after all – but I don’t particularly feel the need to humor anybody on this, so I shan’t.

That being said, Senator Kerry’s suffering from a classic case of kharmic backlash right now, and (putting on my Republican hat for a moment) frankly, he earned it during the earlier AWOL attacks. Then again, President Bush earned his own kharmic backlash by not vetoing McCain-Feingold in the first place. Thus is the balance of the cosmos maintained.

Across the spectrum of the Republican party? Yeah.

  2. Jes, doesn’t it bother you to be so, well, predictable? I mean, you and I both know darn well that I meant across the full political spectrum; but I had a bet with myself that you’d come back with a post that explicitly and/or implicitly denied wrongdoing on your side’s part, and lo! like clockwork, it appeared.
At any rate, please don’t put your words in my mouth. It’s almost as irritating as being told what I really think – and anybody who reads this blog knows how I feel about that.

  3. And let me ratchett down the tone about three notchs here, too. Jes undoubtedly meant it as a joke. Good thing that I can’t post from work, because I feel a Humorless Toad day coming on…

  4. Meh. I should know by now that when I make a joke I need to add a smiley, because my jokes just aren’t funny otherwise. 🙁
Alternatively, I should include a footnote in serious posts to the effect that “This is not a joke. If this were a joke, the Standard Joke Warning Signal* would have alerted you.”
    *SJWS = 😉

  5. There will always be issue ads whether they are called 527’s or 666’s. Because that is a free speech issue.
The problem is not the 527 status as the republicans want to keep defining the issue. The problem is blatant and open disregard for the truth. Yes one ad can say “he voted for tax raises 990 times” and the press will hopefully fact check it and expectedly there will be some way, however minimal and tortured, that one could define “voted for” in a way that you could get to the 990 number or at least close.
The problem with the SBV ad is one of truthfulness. They are like the child who repeatedly tells you he used the toilet paper only later to discover he most certainly did not. To compound the issue, once debunked they continue their claims and deny the physical presence of the poop in front of them.
Dishonesty should always be debunked on both sides. Flagrant disregard for truth should come with a greater penalty just as it does on the football field.

There is of course no such ad.

  7. He couldn’t vote 990 times for tax raises because he missed too many votes. At least he never sponsored one. Anyway, I have a bumper sticker on my hoopty that says, “527s don’t tell lies. People tell lies.” You may all continue your free speech now, but please refraim from exspectruming on this thread.

You mean like when Kerry denounced the MoveOn ad questioning Bush’s service? Is that what you mean by “different”?
Then again, President Bush earned his own kharmic backlash by not vetoing McCain-Feingold in the first place.
Yes, his big mistake was signing the law, not failing to show his moral leadership by denouncing the Swift Vets’ dishonest tactics. And his karmic crime most certainly wasn’t his similarly despicable smears against McCain four years ago. No, the great karmic wheel looks harshly on undercutting your own funding, not demonstrations of lack of character.

Good long-term motto for the blog, Moe, in case the Voice of Moderation gag ever palls (hasn’t yet IMO)…

  10. That looks like a good settlement–within the bounds of parody. Somewhat ironically, “This Land Is Your Land” is completely to the tune of “When the World’s on Fire,” an old-time folk tune that (like so many such) is copyright A.P. Carter.
