Parsing the President

I’m not sure what it tells you exactly, but Wonkette points to this wonderful online tool for parsing the President’s SOTUs and 2001 special address to Congress. Just enter two words (like "marriage" and "compassion" for example) and the tool does the rest.

It shouldn’t be surprising I guess that in all of these five speeches, Bush has mentioned "war" more times than "peace" (even before 9/11). Sigh…

  1. Ok, I’m rethinking this. I can go with GWB not wanting to give ObL the time of day in his SOTU speeches.
Try “health care” and “terror.” Or “environment” and “terror.”
Just like any other President, I suppose, he’s completely avoided the use of the words “gay,” “homosexual,” “guns,” and “abortion” (the latter with one exception).

  2. Try Osama versus Saddam. I’m afraid that the results indicate that George wasn’t just avoiding giving bin Laden free publicity…he was ignoring him as a threat.

  3. I got a /great/ email from my father, probably forwarded. Gave me a belly laugh:
Today is Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address. It is an ironic juxtaposition: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, and the other involves a groundhog.
