The liberal blogosphere was aflame today with new accusations that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) is trying to win the 2008 presidential election.
Suspicions about Sen. Obama’s true motives have been building over the past few weeks, but not until today have the bloggers called him out for betraying the Democratic Party’s losing tradition.
“Barack Obama seems to be making a very calculated attempt to win over 270 electoral votes,” wrote liberal blogger Carol Foyler at LibDemWatch.com, a blog read by a half-dozen other liberal bloggers. “He must be stopped.”

Um, yeah, except I think the critique some bloggers are making is that Obama is already winning:

So, he seems to be ahead in the polls, and the electoral college, but he appears to be chasing after some voters who never have, and never will vote Democratic. As a result his actions and speech over the last few weeks are not seen to be “betraying the Democratic Party’s losing tradition” so much as embracing it.
Other than that, you know, hilarious.
Now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

I must have drank too much last night, because I don’t get the funny here. But Barbara Streisand talking about how we need to embrace Obama’s “Yes, we can” message of “greener energy” from her palace of a home, now that’s funny!

I think it goes something like this:
Obama has been making an obvious and publicized move to the center on several issues.
Borowitz and others are suggesting that this is a good campaign move because it will help Obama to overcome the dread “liberal” label and may help to pick off a few more of the centrist/independents/undecideds.
The joke being that these moves are angering liberal bloggers who would rather a pure, but losing, candidate to a compromised winner.

That’s been prevailing thought, but Dean’s “50 States” strategy is proving that a lot of voters who were thought to be unreachable are being reached. The higher and higher poll numbers aren’t coming from the ozone.

Polls at this point in the game aren’t worth anything.
And we’ve seen what happens when the Democrats aim for a squeaker. The Republican wins, by hook or by crook.
The Dems need a big win, so to sit back now and rest on his laurels would be a huge mistake for Obama.

Conservatives wouldn’t vote for the guy regardless of his position, and the left has no where else to go. So, he has nothing to lose, and quite a bit to gain by courting the moderate and independent vote. Am I right so far? Assuming I am, we might further suppose he will try to stay in the middle for the first term in the hopes of winning a second. How am I doing? Ok. Let’s say he wins a second term. Now we get a look at the real thing. It’s deja vu all over again. So what? Can’t be any worse than what we have now, right? Well, we don’t know. We can take our chances with the Republican, who we know is pretty conservative, or gamble on the Democrat. It will be interesting to see how the electorate decides their children’s future.
