I Go Out on Friday Night and I Come Home on Saturday Morning

By Eric Martin

In honor of Teh One’s ascendance to Supreme and Transcendtal Dear Leader, I am proposing a little Obsidian Wingnut meet up.  Mildly drunken revelry to ensue.  Details below:

Date: Friday, November 7th
Time: 8:45pm
Location: Scratcher (on 5th Street just east of Bowery/Cooper Sq. – the bar is slightly sub-street level fyi).  One of the better pints of Guiness in NYC.

Just ask Natalie the bartender to point you in my direction. RSVP if you’re coming in the comments, and feel free to email me with questions.

  1. I suggest shooting an email to Edward_. He might be interested in joining you. (Unfortunately, you won’t have old von to kick around b/c I’ll be about 1,000 miles away.)

  2. Guinness. Mmm. Had been on quite a Guinness kick a while back, and while I have been trying to cut back in general, I’d love a great pour.
Raise one in victory for me, Eric.
If you ever do this thing in the future, give a tad more notice — and make it a Saturday night if possible — and I just might get the wife to take the trek up to NYC with me. Usually, she’s gung-ho about going to the Big Apple — a two-hour-plus drive — and we have had good luck finding reasonable spots on hotels.com (although given our current finanical straits, I may have to drink vicariously through you, lad). Be safe.

  3. Ach, bedtime, I should have sounded the alarm with more advance notice. Next time. And if we’re talking Guinness, the best pour that I’ve ever had (in NYC) is at Swift’s (and their sister bars, Ulysses and Puck Fair).
Hob: Feel free to recruit for a West Coast version of ObWi Victory Bacchanalia.
Incidentally: I’ll be in SF in April (I go every April for biz). Maybe I’ll try to organize a riot for when I’m out there, if you’re game.

  4. Speaking of meetups, my wife and I are going to come down to the DC area for the inauguration, staying with my dad up in Frederick and coming down into the city for seeing friends, festivities, etc. Any DC-ers interested in a meetup that weekend?

  5. Someday, though, I’d like to share a pint with ya.
Sounds good — I’m in midtown about once a month. You should know, however, that I have a policy of never stopping with just “a pint.”

  6. best pour I’ve ever had
Do you get out to Williamsburg at all? My memory suggests that Mugs Ale House is quite superior. (And of course Spuyten Duyvil is the best beer in the city bar none (except during early spring when the availability of Maibock makes Zum Schneider in the East Village become the best beer in the city); but they have no Guiness available.)

  7. Ulysses
we stayed in a hotel right across the alley from Ulysses, last summer (“Wall St. Inn”, IIRC). that whole alley turns into a sea of white shirts, Friday at 4:30, as all the stock brokers pour out of their offices. you could walk its whole length by stepping on nothing but fine cotton and crew cuts.

Mind, you couldn’t have done that during the Bush years; but once Obama’s in office, well, the rich will become mere stepping stones for the proletariat!

  9. Unfortunately, like von, I’m a bit far away. But have fun and take some pictures!
(I, for one, was pretty surprised with Eric’s Halloween pic. I’d swear you’d be a nerdy looking guy. Maybe even with pocket protector!)

  10. Thanks, Eric. If there is a “next” time, shoot for a Saturday night — the wife and I both work 9-5 on Saturdays.
One of my hangouts here in Newark (Delaware) — Timothy’s — makes a good Black and Tan Yeungling draft. You have to make sure you get the right bartender who knows how to use the spoon, etc.
I’ve always heard good things about Anchor Steam. The wife and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary the day before Election Day, so we splurged, and went to a new place that serves authentic Spanish. They had it on tap and will try it in the future, although the waiter said it is lighter than what I usually favor. I like the idea that this place offers different brews on tap that we don’t normally see around here.
Didn’t try Anchor Steam Monday night because we went with the place’s suggested cocktails: her a Spanish Firecraker (Tequila, lemon, cayenne) and me a Spanish Iced Tea (Pimms and lemon). I had a bad day at work Tuesday and the night of the election had two of those before heading home to take the edge off — kind of like a Long Island Iced Tea but not as sweet.
Speaking of stopping at two, I know what von is saying when he talks about “a pint.”
My famous phrase is “just a couple beers,” although a couple can lead to three or four in short order. (At 6-2, 255, I am OK until I get the urge to do a shot or two.)
Not really a beer drinker at home — the taste of draft is just so much better.
    Cheers.
    As always,

(P.S. Eric — Can’t believe your Raiders gave up so quickly on DeAngelo Hall considering all of the money they invested in him.)

  11. cleek’s comment reminded me of a week-long visit (during Clinton’s first term) I had with my late father, who was a construction foreman and would rent an apartment with some of his buddies in Brooklyn when work would take him there.
Had the time of my life, we really bonded, and Brooklyn was way cooler than I ever imagined.
Can’t remember the name of the place — and I think it was in Manhattan — but an amazing avalanche of ties (from the brokers, etc.) hung from the ceiling. Pretty cool.
Unlike Drew, Eric looked the way I imagined, with a real “Raider” rebel look.
I have a picture on my desk with Biden from this year’s Fourth of July parade. If my wife and I can figure out how to do it — for all I know, she knows already — we will post it on an Open Thread or something.

Mugs’ is good, but Swifts’ is better. IMO at least. Zum Schneider is, as you say, a fine establishment (good if you’re hungry too). Haven’t tried Spuyten Duyvil, but I’ll give it a look next time I’m in the hood.
we stayed in a hotel right across the alley from Ulysses, last summer (“Wall St. Inn”, IIRC). that whole alley turns into a sea of white shirts, Friday at 4:30, as all the stock brokers pour out of their offices…
Yes it does. I’ve lived down in that area for over 7 years now, and it is as you say.
Eric — Can’t believe your Raiders gave up so quickly on DeAngelo Hall considering all of the money they invested in him.
Yeah, I was kind of stunned by that too. But then, the Raiders will never be anything more than a laughingstock until Crazy Al Davis moves on. I’ve resigned myself to that fact. Sad, but true.
I, for one, was pretty surprised with Eric’s Halloween pic. I’d swear you’d be a nerdy looking guy. Maybe even with pocket protector!
Looks can be deceiving, despite the big frame, I’m still a nerd at heart.
Unlike Drew, Eric looked the way I imagined, with a real “Raider” rebel look.
Yeah, but now the facial hair is gone due to the demands of the day job. But in true Raider fashion, I have a prominent scar stretching from the corner of my mouth toward my left cheek.

  13. I’ll certainly try to make it — no promises, but I don’t think I have anything else going on.
    Good to hear.
Eric, thanks, see you tomorrow night.
    Absolutely.

  14. absolutely I shall try to come, all the more because I live on East 3rd St. between 1st & 2nd (i.e., all of three blocks away).
thanks for the video record of our joyous celebration. The pundits all predicted that the blacks would riot in anger if Obama lost, but they failed to predict that the whites would riot in joy if he won. FYI, people actually got arrested for rioting in Williamsburg…

  15. FYI, people actually got arrested for rioting in Williamsburg…
So I heard. Good natured celebrations is what I call it 😉
Do come though. The more the merrier!

  16. Good natured celebrations is what I call it 😉
OT, but did anyone catch South Park last night? (The episode is season 12, “About Last Night…”) The Obama supporters weren’t that crazy, but it was a pretty funny episode nonetheless. I like the idea of Barack and McCain as world-class burglers.

  17. Eric,
Sorry to have to take a rain check, but I hope you’ll organzie another one of these again some time. If you want to do one in the summer, I suggest Bohemian Hall in Astoria: a true Czech style beer garden.

  18. Right now, I’m jealous of everyone who made it to that Itchy and Sratchy bar. I’m a quite a bit more than three blocks away, but still close enough to have come up were it not for, well, having a family and all. My former-bachelor self would have made the trek to the nearest NJT station. Hope you’re all having a blast without boring me. Bottoms up!

  19. Eric,
Likewise. Here’s a suggestion: I’m a member of the FC Barcelona Pena (i.e. Fan Club). On Sunday, December 14, they play the hated Real Madrid and you can watch the game at Nevada Smith’s on Third Avenue between 11th and 12th. Give it a thought.

    Know what you mean.
Boss and I were here late last night because we had a nice p.m. rush, had to stay until 10, so we went for a couple beers — me, three; he, two — and then it was home to domestic bliss:)
Imagine the guys who were at Scratchers are still catching some Zzzz’s.
P.S. I sent you a Phillies note on the thread where you threw a shout-out about them — let me know if you didn’t see it and I’ll recall which thread it was. Sounds like the Phils are serious about getting Matt Holiday of the Rockies to replace Burrell — if so, I’m calling for a repeat!

  21. I did see your reply about the Phils, btfb. Thanks. They should be in good shape for some time to come. Lots of good, young talent. Thank God for football, or it would be an even longer wait for baseball season to start up again. I’m ready for spring training to start right now.

The image has to be uploaded somewhere first, so you have a URL to insert, though.

  23. ModestoKid, RAL, Diana, good to meet you all. Eric, it was fun — thanks for setting it up.
And I’ll try to think up somethings worthwhile to come out of the shadows and comment with.
