The government alleged Mr. Blagojevich was considering appointing himself to the Senate to avoid impeachment, resuscitate his career and make corporate contacts that would pay off after leaving public office. He also believed, the government claimed, that he would have greater leverage to rehabilitate his reputation and consolidate his power base for a possible run at the presidency in 2016.
Josh Marshall adds:
I think Blagojevich’s best defense is probably going to be an insanity defense based on the evidence of his idea that he was setting himself up to run for president by appointing himself to serve out Obama’s senate term.
They might have to commit him to an insane asylum. If these kinds of statements are true, the AG may be able to move quickly to the Illinois Supreme Court to remove him for mental incompetency.
It makes perfect sense if you highlight a bit more.

It’s quite true that having been impeached would have severely impacted his presidential prospects.
Maybe he can hire Harriet Miers to defend him. 🙂
I’m thinking that the guy has an aggressive frontal lobe tumor.
TAPPED cites a Chicago Magazine profile from last February:
Yikes.
We basically knew that Blago was full of something for years. It turns out, it was himself.
Makes you wonder what Rahm had to pay for his seat – and will Obama pardon him. And what did Da’ President(elect) know and when did he know it? And why do they have to lie to fabricate some distance. The fruits are falling from the trees. Will Leno have to abide by the Fairness Doctrine?
