Let me give a welcome to regular commentor wj, who will take up the gauntlet and do whatever one does with gauntlets. He'll probably be taking over the weekend open thread. Anyone else interested? Write the kitty!

I’ve actually always wondered about that phrase. If one accepts a challenge by picking up a thrown gauntlet…do they keep it? Hand it back? What?
As a prelude to an armed fight, it always seemed a little awkward.
Anyway, I just wanted to say I’m looking forward to wj’s posts.
i’d keep it, and then mercilessly attack the unprotected hand.
I suppose it would depend on whether the thrown gauntlet hit your foot or not. (No steel toed boots back then!)
If you want to see a good example of gauntlets thrown, watch the BBC’s production of The Hollow Crown — Shakespeare’s Richard II, which I’m in the middle of right now.
Specifically, the early scene of Bolingborke and Mowbray called before the King.
Bugs Bunny, Monty Python, the Marx Brothers, Mel Brooks and the Three Stooges must have addressed the problem of gauntlet-throwing gone awry, but who time to look?
Well prepared knights would carry extra gauntlets.
Or their squire would.
