same as it ever was

by russell

a bit of local history.  local to me, at least – the events described here all occurred within a mile or two of where I live.

plus ca change.  I wonder if the bit about the local militia stand-off at the bridge is a peek at our future.

  1. I also think about situations like this when thinking about armed conflict and unrest in the US. The Civil War was unusual, but these sorts of conflicts are quite common in our history.

  2. My aunt lived in a house where, in the basement, they hid livestock from the Hessians during the revolution. That’s all I got.

  3. From the link
The town voted not to build the hospital, but gave the desired permission to the petitioners to undertake it as a private enterprise, provided “that the consent of the town of Salem could be obtained,” and that the hospital should be so regulated that the inhabitants of Marblehead would “be in no danger of infection therefrom.”
    Freedom!!!
