I just got my copy of Andrew Bacevich's Washington Rules. How about a book discussion in a few weeks, to give other people a chance to read it?
Should we put up a "buy at Amazon" or "buy at Powells" link, to get kickbacks for a worthy cause? If so, what?
Have some open thread to go with it!
First, we need a “Fill in the Verb” contest in your opening sentence.
ha. Otherwise I’m in – parental duties notwithstanding.
ok, embarrass me. “got” was what I was thinking of.
After what Amazon did to writers earlier this year, I prefer to not do business with Amazon if I have a reasonable alternative, myself. Do I’d favor barnesandnoble.com but not amazon.com. But that’s just me.
Or Powell’s is good, or whomever, other than Amazon.
I completely agree, Gary, which is why I switched goodbookoftheday from being an Amazon Affiliate to being with Powell’s. Do you have a Powell’s link?
I’m in. Is it illustrated?
I’m in. Is it illustrated?
“Do you have a Powell’s link?”
The book is here.
Their partnership program, from which you have to sign up to then be a “partner” and be able to put up a button/design to get kickbacks, is here.
McTex: FWIW, I chuckled at that.
But by the second time, I knew what to expect 😉
After what Amazon did to writers earlier this year
Yeah, Amazon was just awful. How dare they subsidize the price of electronic books? I mean, Amazon was blowing tons of their own money in order to (1) lower ebook prices for consumers and (2) increase sales for authors. Those MONSTERS! How dare they?!
And when one publisher decided to play hardball with Amazon in an effort to stop them from (1) and (2), they decided to fight back rather than instantly surrendering.
Of course, I’m not sure whether I should believe anything that Doctrow says given that, you know, Kindle books can be read on PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods and (soon?) Android phones and tablets even though he insists that there’s no way to read Kindle books without using Amazon’s hardware. Now Doctrow is not stupid, so I’m sure he realizes that his statement is just absurd. I wonder if the rest of his comments are also wrong.
I’m in for anything that makes Powell’s more awesome.
But by the second time, I knew what to expect 😉
The second one was for Phil.
Ha!
“I’m in. Is it illustrated?”
Chock full of naked neo-cons.
“I’m in. Is it illustrated?”
Chock full of naked neo-cons.
That reminds me of a scene in “I, Claudius” where Claudius complains that the bookseller has illustrated his history of the Punic wars with elephants and gets shouted at by his mother that no one would read it anyway and that to interest Tiberius it would have to be naked women “And then he would look (just) at the pictures.”
Chock full of naked neo-cons.
Sarah Palin?
If she became president, they’d call her Babe-raham Lincoln.
(sorry)
If she became president, they’d call her Babe-raham Lincoln.
And if she ever does a country/western, she’d be “Wailin’ Palin”.
(no apologies)
Hey, there’s already the Wailin’ Jennys.
Who, in my opinion, are the cat’s meow.
“Got” seems to me to be a perfectly perfect sort of verb.
I’d go with Powell’s, just because, but I won’t be buying anything from anyone on account of I’m strictly a library puppy.
Oh, by the way, I have asked elsewhere, and so I ask here: is anyone else a Library Thing-er? I have my books listed under the name Magatha.
Two questions:
1. All my recent travels to the UK have been for work. Which is notsomuchfun. But I’m back in London next week and determined to get a decent drink at a spot that is not quite on the beaten path. (It won’t be off the beaten path for three reasons: (1)I can do long walking distance to The Strand, but not more, (2) I won’t have much time, and (3) I won’t have much energy.) Suggestions?
2. If there are readers from Grand Rapids (MI) on this blog, I’d love to hear a favorite place for a drink/eat. I’d prefer to stay in the downtownish area, but assume that I don’t want to go to the BOB. And that I already know about Founders, 25, Leo’s, Charley Crab’s, every hotel restaurant, Republic, and Hopcats. (I am in GR a lot.) Looking for somewhere new.

von:
Will you be in London between 10/1 and 10/3?
Remember the idea for ObWiCon?
It seems like now might be a propitious time for it in light of this.
Gary, maybe you aren’t up to organizing it but is anyone else interested?
I’m afraid I’ll be headed in exactly the other direction around that weekend.
