  1. hey wow this sounds pretty good, thanks for the heads up
I’m still partial towards the new M83 album though.

  2. No Wow is indeed good. I’ll have to check this out… I really haven’t been buying much music lately, but it seems that there is a lot out right now that’s right up my alley.

  3. Just picked this up a few days ago. Great album. Their earlier stuff (Keep on Your Mean Side, No Wow) are good too, but the new stuff is, IMO, much better.
Seriously, though, Pitchfork? I’m convinced Pitchfork is a plot by people who hate music to make the rest of us hate it, too. Pretentious, petty, gratuitiously contrarian wanking. I usually find allmusic’s reviews to be more useful, and considerably less aggravating.

  4. I’m a huge Kills fan who was actually disappointed by No Wow. Their first album Keep on Your Mean Side, was bluesier, gutsier, but also much more tuneful. That’s where I’d start if you want to check them out. Oh, and they’re a fantastic live act.

  5. I was just reading another rave review of Midnight Boom elsewhere yesterday, maybe at Spencer Ackerman’s blog. Gotta check it out I guess. Though I’m expecting and hoping, my favorite 2008 album is probably going to be the as-yet-unreleased new Venus 3 record.

  6. note to political bloggers: stick to what you’re good at.
no offense, but this album is thoroughly “meh”

  7. This is ok, publius, but I can’t see it being my favourite album of the year. Actually, I like the new Black Mountain a lot more.
    Ban kovarsky.

  8. yeah kovarsky apparently didn’t read the word “tentative” b/c it interfered with his hilarious comment (don’t worry – i know him)

  9. don’t worry – i know him
    Isn’t that cause for worry?
Characteristically, his last post makes no sense.

  10. at first glance, i don’t see much daylight between these guys, the YeahYeahYeahs and Les Savy Fav.
which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

  11. The Kills? Well, de gustibus, etc. I haven’t bought a lot of complete albums in 2008, but of the ones I have, let’s see . . . the new Destroyer is, well, Destroyer, just Dan Bejar doing his art-rock thing and doing it well. The She & Him project by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward is fun, a nice retro slice of girl-group pop, if a little formalist. Goldfrapp’s A&E is OK, tends to repeat a little. The One Too Many Hearts EP by The Bird & The Bee is excellent.
I might pick up the Georgie James album. Anyone heard it? Opinions? I like “Need Your Needs” a lot.

  12. I’ll have to check this stuff out – always like to hear suggestions…
But I already have picked out my Most Likely To Be Album of the Year and I haven’t even heard it yet. If the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album (comes out April 8) takes its inspiration from their Grinderman project like they say it does – look out!
If you don’t know the Grinderman album, a reviewer said it was the sound of middle-aged men aging badly – perfect! The rockers on that one are some of the best cathartic releases I’ve heard in a long time. This music paces the room kicking over chairs and garbage cans and shouting “WHOOOOO!” What a hoot!

  13. I’ll agree with the earlier commenter: No Wow was a disappointment, but Keep On Your Mean Side was superb.

  14. OK, publius, after frequent listenings I’ve got to concede that this Kills album really grows on you.
