The image that sticks with me, more even than the heroic death, is him yelling “how dare you?!?” at them.
Even if embellished, it’s not hard to believe. Many people, particularily parents, seem to have some wierd hard-wiring in their brains that causes you to lose all fear when protecting children. Before I had kids, I would have been hard pressed to guarantee that I could give up my life to save someone else. But after breeding, you pretty much don’t have a choice. And you have to start changing the channel when horrifying news stories involving children come on.

Still stuck on what’s true. I don’t think heroism inflation serves us in the long run (speaking generally). I was greatly impressed by Jessica Lynch’s story but now that appears to have been some combination of press enthusiasm and Pentagon propaganda (not to belittle Lynch’s admirable service).
