I walk past this twice a day:
… And I’ve always wondered who put it there, and why nobody ever cleaned it off. It’s been defaced for a while now, from what I remember.
I don’t really know why this struck me as interesting, so I won’t be heartbroken if I don’t get comments on this…

I think this has been misinterpreted.
Clearly, it’s an instruction as to the side on which the dispenser should be placed.
I see this on other papers’ dispensers in SF. Big whoop.
Personally, given the option to the right of this dispenser, I’d still buy my paper from the one defaced. On the other one, this graffiti would be redundant.
At the Vienna metro, the same thing is written on both the WaPo and Washington Times dispensers. Also on both at the corner of Wilson Blvd. and N. Lynn in Arlington.
I’m not sure why this has been automatically adopted as some kind of supposed anguished cry of a supressed anti-liberal-bias conservative underclass – it’s far more likely that this was done by some black-clad anti-World Bank protester during one of the antiglobalist puppet shows that occasionally flow around downtown and really brighten up the place. To those people, the pro-trade, pro-globalism, generally pro-war NYT (cf: Judith Miller) is the worst kind of right-wing mouthpiece.
I agree. It’s an an anti-liberal bias grafitto, it’s an you-are-not-liberal-enough grafitto.
“I agree. It’s an an anti-liberal bias grafitto, it’s an you-are-not-liberal-enough grafitto.”
Oh, I’d agree with that; I was just amused that a picture of it showed up in a weblog. A lot of this online stuff feels like it’s detached from the real world, you know? 🙂
