The fool in question is Terry McAuliffe, who has apparently acquired a doormat with George Bush on it, the better to have people walk over it. I’m guessing that it didn’t take the Commissar long to remember a parallel to remember somebody else who wanted his visitors to ritually defile the image of an American President…
Unfair? Sure. Terry McAuliffe isn’t a genocidal evil dictator, and wouldn’t be even if he had the opportunity. However, he also apparently has the political instincts of a dead limpet. A doormat that would be funny on the doorstep of a rank-and-file Democrat means something else entirely when it’s parked outside the Democratic Party’s Chairman’s office: it may not be “I voted for it before I voted against it”, but it’s still off-key, more than a little petty and reinforces the existing popular stereotype that the Democrats have a tine ear when it comes to natsec issues. Why is McAullife giving us free hits?
And why are all y’all letting him? Is he that good a fundraiser?
Yeah, the doormat is poor taste.
I agree. A door mat is no substitute for a dart board.
I think this proves that Richard Clarke is wrong about the administrations approach to terrorism. At the very least, it demontrates the link between Saddam and McAuliffe. All we have to do now is develope the link between Terry and Osama and the Iraq war is justified.
Sorry, can’t add to the echo chamber in here. A doormat? Again, A doormat? POTUS jokes about WMD’s at the Press dinner and this gets your knickers in a twist? Frist gives a speech denouncing Clarke as a possible perjurer on the Senate floor and then afterwards tells reporters he has no idea if Clarke contradicted himself in his previous testimony and a doormat bugs you? Condi won’t testify in public (read: in front of the widows and orphans of 9/11) and a doormat is what’s eating at you? You know, it’s ok to put the bucket down if your arms are tired. Carrying water for this administration isn’t required anymore now that they have gone so far beyond the pale.
Money. Moneymoneymoney.
They loves precious Terry in Hollywood because of subtle touches like the doormat.
agree fully with Wilfred’s other points…but that doesn’t make the doormat any better taste.
it’s a sophmoric gesture…it wouldn’t hurt his cause any to lose it.
Word on the street is that Terry McAuliffe is a major league asshole. Big time.
I tried to fire him last year, but apparently I’m not in the chain of command. Go figure.
It’s Terry’s office and he is entitled to do as he pleases. I think that Terry is an enduring treasure for the DNC. I would be saddened if his political mastery were cast aside prior to him achieving another triumph equal to that of 2000 or 2002.
terry mcauliffe is a wholly bought and paid for subsidiary of the clintons; his main job is to make sure kerry does not win the presidency in 2004 so hilary will have a clear shot at it in 2008. however much he wants the republicans to win, he must present a convincing face to the democratic faithful, he must show them that he is at least trying to beat bush this year. hence, the rug.
Sure, akaky. Go ahead and think that.
What makes you think McAuliffe would be a dictator if given the chance?
Moe,
Shhhhhhhh.
I thought you were at the meeting in 1988 where we selected Terry for the DNC Op. Don’t you remember? It was the same meeting where we picked Maxine Waters to…
“What makes you think McAuliffe would be a dictator if given the chance?”
Nothing, which is why I specifically stated otherwise. 🙂
Moe
PS: wiifred, if you want to dismiss that post as me simply being bugged, then fine: go ahead and stick with the guy who helped lose the Democrats the Senate, spent mondo political streetcred in an unsuccessful attempt to unseat Jeb Bush in FL and engineered the primary season that gave all y’all John Kerry for your nominee (and that’s just the top three).
Dude, but we’ve got Demzilla!
A friggin’ database that somehow took millions of dollars over several years to assemble.
Pathetic.
There’s a reason his nom de guerre is Terry McAwful.
Moe, McAuliffe isn’t one of my faves, I would put him about equally as inept as Gillespie as both give me the creeps. Pretty much think they are both hacks. Both Parties are full of folks I’d like to see run out on a rail. Power corrupts and our fair capital needs a broom. But that doesn’t play well in this chamber. It’s goosestepping time in the partisan world.
But with all the things going down with the present administration…. a doormat? Dude… you sounded like an old granny or something, not like someone who just had a vacation for pete’s sake.
Hi Moe, just back from the gym where I obviously didn’t have my mind totally on the workout. Just had a question as I have been a poster since early on O.W. but not the parent site and not quite sure how these blogs work, if partisanship is front and center or if it’s about finding facts regardless of party.
My question is, if Gillespie had bought a Kerry doormat, would you have written a post saying essentially the same thing? By the way this isn’t written disrespectfully, i’m just trying to figure out who and what this blog is about and stands for.
“My question is, if Gillespie had bought a Kerry doormat, would you have written a post saying essentially the same thing?”
Yes, but it’s the wrong analogy: you’re still seeing this in terms of tit-for-tat, or possibly your-sins-justify-our-sins. This post was neither: it was a WTF? entry, not to mention a bit of a reality check.
Moe
PS: BTW, your first comment was directly and unfairly insulting to both Edward and fabius; they are too polite to request an apology, but I am not too polite to require that you tender them one.
Terry’s doormat stunt has done its job, namely providing a lightning rod for Bush fanatics to ground on. He’s running interference, delighting the base and pissing off the oppo. It’s his frikkin’ job to distract the nuts of both sides.
But Moe, I’m never insulted when people associate me with you. It does tend to weaken their argument, though.
Moe,
won’t be putting out my hand again anytime soon after your slap. thanks for letting me know the lay of the land here. i sure did get an answer to my question.
and Fabius, I thought it was pretty obvious I started my post before you posted or I would have said something. and I contacted Edward and he didn’t feel any apology was in order.
Wilfred,
I’ll state it here too. No apology needed. I understand your point…please don’t feel you need to pull your punches on my account.
