I don’t know if this is true…

… about a F/A-18A really being offered for sale on eBay, that is. If it was, it’s sold now. Dammit, I need to get an account. And several million bucks in spending money. Hmm, why not ask for a reliable FTL drive, too?

PS: Going to a wedding tomorrow, so don’t expect any quick responses – from me, at least. Party on, everyone.

Yes, yes, I’m telegraphing my age.

  1. Severe doubts on all counts. Those who actually can acquire an F-18 to begin with do so with permission of the U.S. government. No one’s going to be able to sell one on eBay without that permission.
And, and aircraft carrier? Please. What would you do with it, even if you could buy it?

  2. The aircraft carrier listing discussed turning it into a hotel, or an amusement-park, or some other sort of tourist attraction. It was actually a WWII-era British CVL that had been extensively refitted, with an angled flight deck shown in the picture.
The ad made some claims about being able to sleep 1,000 people in it, and then used some goofy room-rate calculations to make the money end sound vaguely feasible. I agree, though, that it’s probably a hoax. I haven’t checked Jane’s Fighting Ships for the actual vessel, so I can’t say for sure.

Dale did, and the name matched the description. That does not, of course, mean that the ship was really available for sale, much less on eBay.

  4. Janet! Hiya!!
Well, I’m glad that Dale followed up on it, and that it wasn’t an obvious hoax. Still doesn’t guarantee anything about it being genuine, but it gives something to go on. Did he see which government had finally wound up in possession of the ship? I have this niggling feeling that it was Brazil, but I can’t say with any certainty.
