When you say “pinging”, are you talking about pinging a host to see if it’s up or not? If so, doing it’s dead simple: presuming you’re using Windows, open up a DOS window (open the Start menu, click on “Run”, and enter “command”), then at the command prompt type “ping [hostname]”. So if you wanted to see if this blog were responding or not, you’d type “ping obsidianwings.blogspot.com”. You can also use IP addresses.
You might also find this book useful.
And of course, once you’ve mastered ping, you can move on to its more powerful and useful cousin, traceroute.
Sorry: I meant more like “How do I make sure that other sites’ trackback function is referencing the fact that I linked to them?”
I asked typepad support about alphabetizing typelists a while ago and they said they’re working on it.
To trackback to another site, just paste the trackback url into the “Send a TrackBack to these addresses” box when you’re posting.

Tried that, didn’t seem to work.
Hmm… Are you sure you’re using the trackback url as opposed to the permalink? (You’ve probably already check that, but just in case!)
